Surfer and His Buddy

This blog is about exploring the world around me with a motorcycle and a camera. It is not your usual motorcycle or photography blog. Here you will find photographs and videos to look at of the places I go and writings to read about what I see and think about during the rides. If you want to see what happens when a motorcycle and a camera are used to go in search of Eudaimonia — a flourishing life — you are in the right place. If you want to see how these experiences become photographs, art videos and essays, you are in the right place. Don’t take my word for it, Just take five minutes to look around. Many of the posts (which you can find by looking in the right hand column on every page) will have photographs and videos.

I will also be writing about the ideas behind what I am trying to do here. I hope this will guide the blog toward something more than a random collection of writings, photographs and videos taken on motorcycle trips. You can find out more by going to the Motorcycle, PhotographyEudaimonia  and Essays tabs at the top of every page.

How This All Started  Motorcycle Travel Photography

In 2009 I relocated to Sarasota from Berkeley, California for an early retirement. I’ve always wanted to explore photography as a hobby and began doing so in 2010. I completed a few satisfying projects, but something was still missing for me. Then, on Sunday, July 21st, 2013 I suddenly decided, “Why not add a motorcycle to the mix?” I am an avid road cyclist and always wondered what riding a motorcycle would be like. Well, why not stop wondering and find out?

I registered online for the Florida Safety Council class scheduled that Tuesday and endured two grueling days (let’s face it folks, at age 55, two physically demanding all-day trainings with 7:00 am start times are grueling). By the end of the week, my excitement had me ordering my new motorcycle, a Kawasaki Vulcan 900 Cruiser!

That weekend, my excitement supernova’ed into an integration of the motorcycle my camera, and an idea brewing for the past ten years: how does a person lead a flourishing life for the whole life cycle? As most of us discover, we write a series of chapters in our book on earth. Those chapters have their constraints but we will never know ahead of time what those really are. Are we ready to find out? Are we ready, as the Buddhists say to, Leap And The Net Will Appear?

I decided to leap. In a matter of days my idea for a blog caught me, springing forth like Athena fully formed. It was an amazing experience to live through, to witness a number of half-seen ideas fall into an organized whole and get materialized into a functioning blog within a week’s time. In fairness, I must say that Eudaimonia has been floating in my mind since 2000 and I felt I would someday come back to it. Someday arrived 13 years later with the camera and motorcycle in tow. Leap and the net will catch you.
